Laethanta Sona (Happy Days) Mound

Working with Ger Clancy at ArtFX. I was design assistant n Samuel Beckett’s Laethanta Sona (Happy Days). Preformed in 2021 on Inis Oirr and later again in the Samuel Beckett Theatre (separate design & build), for Company SJ and The Abbey Theatre.

Ger envisioned the mound to be built as if it was part of the landscape, erupting/subsiding from the Burren Limestone rock. Together we pre-built the 2.5m tall wooden under structure in the workshop in Blessington before packing it up and shipping it to Inis Oirr to be built in it final position on the island. This was then encased by limestone rock from around the site.

The play required the actor to descend part way into the mound throughout the performance. As power was an issue on the site on the island as well as sound, we could not use any actuated lift system. I created a self-contained platform with multiple levels to allow for this action to happen during the performance.
